Mocha Mojo: hip 'n happening
Mocha Mojo opens its red wooden gates to
reveal a new look and healthy menu that
takes you back to the days of the flower
children

Whoever thought theme restaurants were
out has to step in to the refreshingly
nostalgic retro themed restaurant, Mocha
Mojo. Complete with Roy Lichtenstein pop
murals, lava lamps, love seats, furry
red cushions, Andy Warhol’s famous 40
licks, a telephone table, this place has
hippie written all over it – from the
funky font on the name board at the
entrance to the music you know all the
lyrics to and the retro pop art inspired
menu card.
Riyaaz Amlani, managing director, says
they’ve introduced a lot of new, “more
healthy” sections on the menu but
they’ve also retained “all the good
stuff” from the old Mocha menu. So all
you Chocolate Avalanche, Rocky Road,
Oreo Shake and Poutine lovers can
breathe now.
The hookah lovers who have been waiting
for months for Mocha to return with
their exceptionally smooth hookas are in
for a rude shock. Mocha Mojo comes back
with all the good stuff except the
hookas.
Coolers
Amlani highly recommends the hot
chocolate drinks on the menu but with
child like tact, he adds, “I can’t tell
you which one to have, I love all my
chocolate equally.” The Varlhona White
Hot Chocolate laced with citron is yummy
but we still prefer their exotic range
of fresh fruit and vegetable juices that
are served in charming jam jars. With
only 102 calories, the refreshing blend
of pineapple, apple, melon and orange is
quite literally a jarful of vitamins and
fibre. The lemon iced tea with cranberry
which comes in an extremely large glass
container is very refreshing. The only
problem with it though, is that it
tasted nothing like tea.
If you’re in the mood for something more
indulgent, treat yourself to a divine
low-cal peach and strawberry yoghurt
smoothie. This gorgeous bubblegum pink
drink is a pleasure to look at, tastes
absolutely delightful and makes you feel
yummy-in-your-tummy. If healthy
delicious goodness is just not for you,
stick to the mocha classics like the
creamy Bailey’s Irish Cream Shake that,
in spite of the new healthy streak, has
maintained its original giddy effect.
Raw Food
One of the very exciting healthy
additions to the menu is the raw food.
Raw food, essentially, is predominantly
uncooked vegetarian ingredients made to
resemble “real food”. As unappetising as
that may sound, if you are an
adventurous foodie, you must try it.
Even if you are a skeptical “pure
non-vegetarian”, the raw garden lasagna
is bound to surprise you – pleasantly.
As you eat through earthy layers, you
will be complimented with the cooling
flavor of the zucchini and cucumber and
the tender and creamy sauciness of the
aioli. You will also be stunned at how
much the almond cheese tastes like real
cheese.
With layers of zucchini, cucumber,
tomato with almond cheese, cashew aioli
and pesto, you will be fascinated by how
delicious raw food can taste and the
textures and flavours will, quite
simply, blow your mind.
Cooked Food
If this still doesn’t have you convinced
maybe you can try the less risky but
definitely not less tasty seafood
linguini with flecked red chilli
quirkily served in the pan it is seared
in. This lip smacking juicy squid, crab
meat and prawns meal laced with a creamy
lemon and basil pesto served on a fresh
bed of very flavorful pasta can
effortlessly compete with the linguini
at some of the best restaurants in the
city.
The panini with citrus flavored chicken
is an experiment gone very wrong. The
chicken is too sweet, too chewy and if
it was not for the lovely multi grain
bread it came in, it would’ve been
unpalatable. But all sour notes due to
the Panini were redeemed by the dessert.
Dessert

While the
restaurant also offers raw dessert like
the raw chocolate and coconut mousse, we
recommend spoiling yourself with the
warm gooey Amedei Chuao Chocolate
Pudding. The chuao from Amedei is
considered by most, and Mocha Mojo, to
be the best dark chocolate in the world.
As deliciously decadent as this pudding
is, it is definitely not the best. The
18k gold coated chocolate truffle on it,
however, is absolutely out of this world
and the jalapeno pesto adds an
interesting savory twist to this
otherwise sweet dessert.
The hot chocolate soup, with its
assortment of drowning chocolate, soaked
biscotti crumbs and floating
marshmallows, is better than most soups
but it’s not better than Mocha Mojo’s
delicious chocolate fondue. If only they
had better goodies than éclairs and
sponge cake to dip in it.
With 10% service tax and 12.5% VAT,
Mocha Mojo is not going to be easy on
your pocket. But there’s something about
this place that makes it worth it and
more importantly makes you go back for
more.
